The Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) painted over 2000 paintings in his short life, but he remains one of the most famous painters of all time. As such, there are several Van Gogh paintings that have been reproduced countless times and are known by nearly everyone in the art world, even those who couldn’t tell an artist’s technique from their own style. Here are five of the most famous Van Gogh paintings!

1) The Starry Night

The Starry Night is perhaps one of Van Gogh’s most well-known works. Completed in 1889, it was painted during a time of great struggle and suffering for Vincent van Gogh. He painted The Starry Night while hospitalized in Saint-Remy after having suffered a mental breakdown. In order to combat his struggles with depression and anxiety, he turned inward and began painting again.

2) Almond Blossom

It’s difficult not to be mesmerized by Vincent van Gogh’s work, but there are a few select paintings that deserve special attention like Almond Blossom. He painted this masterpiece in the year 1890 and the reason was also a happy one. He was overjoyed to know about the birth of his nephew- the child of his brother Theo; so he painted Almond Blossom to give as a gift to his brother.  To him, this painting is a symbol of all good aspects like hope, optimism, beauty, and revival. This painting is one of the dearest piece to his family!

3) Sunflowers

‘Sunflowers’ is a series of still life painting by Vincent van Gogh. He gave two series of this painting- the first series came in the year 1887 in Paris and second one in the year 1888 in Arles, Provence.

The story behind the second series of Sunflowers painting is really interesting. Paul Gauguin and Van Gogh were good friends. He wanted to welcome his friend Paul in Arles in a unique way so he painted Sunflowers for the second time to give a nice decorative touch to the guest's room.

These paintings look amazing due to vivid hues and thick paints that further add a texture & dimension to them.

4) Irises

Just like Starry Nights, Vincent Van Gogh painted Irises in 1889 while staying at the mental asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He was the only one who was allowed to roam around in the gardens so he painted hospital gardens multiple times.

This painting along with the Starry Night painting was presented in the annual exhibition- Société des Artistes Indépendants in the year 1889 by his brother Theo. You will be shocked to know that around 100 years later, this painting is sold for $53.9 million dollars by Sotheby. It was sold for the highest price at that time!

5) Bedroom in Arles

The 'Bedroom in Arles' is the painting that shows the simple bedroom of Vincent Van Gogh in the Yellow House in Arles. It was painted in 1888.

He painted three varied versions of this painting that can be differentiated from each other by the paintings on the right side wall. Purposefully, he decided not to implement the perspective rules to this specific scene. He preferred giving a "flattened" appeal to this painting so it would appear as a Japanese print.
